SOCIAL CAPITAL SMART FELLOWSHIP
Building the Connections That Drive Real Outcomes
The Challenge
Across the country, workforce and youth development professionals are expected to help young people and adults access employment, education, training, entrepreneurship, and other opportunities that lead to economic mobility.
But here is the reality:
85% of human service frontline workers do not have strong, consistent connections to the individuals, organizations, and institutions needed to meet those needs.
This is not a performance issue.
It is a system issue.
- Connection building is not taught
Staff are expected to do it, but rarely trained - Connection building is not measured
Systems track activity, enrollment, and completion, not access - Connection building is not supported
Staff are not given the time, tools, or structure to do it consistently
As a result, opportunities are identified…
but they do not always lead to real access.
Why This Matters for Workforce and Youth Development
Success in workforce and youth development is not just about skills, credentials, or program completion.
It is about access.
Access to employers
Access to mentors
Access to industry professionals
Access to real opportunity
We also know that long-term success is deeply connected to a sense of attachment and belonging within industries, workplaces, and professional communities.
Yet in most systems:
- Skill development is prioritized
- Placement is tracked
- But connection is not consistently built or maintained
If participants are expected to succeed in careers and entrepreneurship,
they must be connected to the people and environments where opportunity actually exists.
What This Fellowship Does
The Social Capital Smart Fellowship is a structured, nine-month experience designed to help workforce and youth development professionals:
- Build stronger connections to employers, industry stakeholders, and community partners
- Improve access to real opportunities for the people they serve
- Move from placement to sustained connection and advancement
- Apply a consistent, repeatable system for connection building
This is not a one-time training.
It is a system that supports:
- Learning
- Application
- Reflection
- Continuous improvement over time
It transforms informal, inconsistent engagement into a structured, measurable practice.

Stronger connections make your work more effective, more efficient, and more impactful.
What Makes This Different
Most systems rely on:
- Informal connections
- Individual effort
- Inconsistent follow-through
This fellowship introduces:
- A structured approach to building and maintaining connections
- A way to track and improve access over time
- Ongoing support to help staff apply the work in real situations
It turns connection from something expected…
into something built, measured, and sustained.
The Goal
The goal is simple:
- Stronger connections
- Better access
- Better outcomes
For the people you serve
And for the professionals doing the work
This is not about adding more work.
It is about making the work you already do more effective.
