The Opportunity Navigation System is Social Capital Builders’ structured learning and coaching platform for helping organizations improve economic mobility and social well being by strengthening the connections that influence access to jobs, training, advancement, and long term outcomes. It was developed to capture and use data on participants’ access to industry and community stakeholders, an area that has historically gone unmeasured in workforce and youth development.

At its core, the Opportunity Navigation System helps programs see what is often invisible. It reveals where opportunity access is weak, where industry and community connections need to grow, and how staff can intentionally support the kinds of relationships that lead to real outcomes.

How it works

Step 1: Connection Data

Participants identify and document their existing connections to people, organizations, and institutions within relevant industry opportunity fields. This creates a clearer picture of who is already in their orbit and where access exists.

Step 2: Data Analysis and Improvement

Participants analyze their connection data to identify strengths, gaps, and missed opportunities. Through structured reflection and social network analysis tools, they learn how to improve the quality, positioning, and usefulness of their connections over time.

Step 3: Supported Connection Building

Participants receive ongoing support to build, strengthen, and maintain connections using guided outreach, follow up strategies, and structured activities that help turn connection data into real career progress.

Why this approach works

The Opportunity Navigation System is designed to work across different program models, including self directed and instructor assisted settings. It helps build the capacity and connections of staff as well as participants, aligns participant goals with program level relationships, and keeps the work human guided rather than AI dependent. Technology is used selectively to support communication and reflection without replacing trust, judgment, or human connection.
