Module One: Social Capital Initiation
Objectives:
- Define “social capital.”
- Describe the history of social capital theory and why it’s critical to success in life.
- Explain the difference between social capital building and networking.
- Examine the relationships between social capital, educational and professional success, and overall health and well-being.
- Understand meritocracy, homophily, bias, and implicit bias in the context of social capital.
- Identify supportive adults in your lives to commence your social capital building process.
Module Two: Social Capital Literacy
Objectives:
- Understand social capital literacy.
- Understand social capital ties (Strong, Weak, Loose, and Dormant) and describe examples of each.
- Understand familial, developmental, and gateway connections and describe examples.
- Understand bonding, bridging, and linking social capital and describe the benefits.
Module Three: Social Network Analysis
Objectives:
- Explore social capital connections that your team may have in common with peers.
- Describe the history of social capital theory and why it’s critical to success in life.
- Explain the difference between social capital building and networking.
- Examine the relationships between social capital, educational and professional success, and overall health and well-being.
- Understand meritocracy, homophily, bias, and implicit bias in the context of social capital.
- Identify supportive adults in your lives to commence your social capital building process.
Module Four: Social Capital Development
Objectives:
- Describe anchoring in the social capital context. Engage in the anchoring process.
- Understand the concept of signaling and its role in social capital. Apply signaling to your social capital development.
- Use the SCB SCOP method to develop social capital with at least four OGs who can support career development.
- Explain the advantages (and disadvantages) of social media. Make informed decisions about how to use technology to build social capital.
- Analyze barriers to building social capital—and create solutions to those barriers!
- Practice specific strategies to build rapport when communicating with social capital assets.
- Identify potential connection points with OGs. Understand how to use these connections to build strong professional relationships.
Module Five: Maintaining Social Capital
Objectives:
- Determine priorities for increasing social capital using the CARTI framework.
- Describe network closure and its advantages and disadvantages.
- Practice network closure with key OGs.
