Introduction to Social Capital Literacy

COURSE OVERVIEW

In this three-hour course, sta and students will learn about the importance of social capital and examine how it relates to future economic success. Social capital is the value of a person's connections to gainfully employed individuals, organizations, and institutions. With proper social capital building skills and opportunities, youth and adults can significantly increase their chances of gainful employment and successful futures. By effectively teaching social capital literacy, schools and programs can help millions of "Opportunity Seekers" open the doors to dreams that many may have never thought possible.

INSTRUCTION

nstruction will utilize virtual assets including Zoom, Contests, Google Classroom, Guest Appearances from Social Capital Builders, Experiential Activities, and YouTube.

COURSE ASSESSMENT

Participants will complete an assessment to gauge the success of their social capital literacy gains and competencies.

Introduction to Social Network Analysis

Time: 180 minutes

COURSE OVERVIEW

In our Social Network Analysis (SNA) Academy, we teach staff how to help job seekers map opportunity networks and identify patterns of relationships and flows with people, groups, and organizations that can influence their economic and employment opportunities. Through SNA, programs will broaden their understanding of the social capital building process, evaluate the significance of each persons’ role, and develop strategies to support interactions to improve labor market access and mobility.

By the end of the Social Network Analysis Academy, staff will:

• Explore strategies to assist job seekers in identifying opportunity networks, individuals who can be a source of labor market information and support.
• Develop strategies to assist job seekers in strategically linking to these labor market mentors for a period of one year or more.
• Learn how to conduct an Opportunity Network Analysis and utilize various social network analysis tools and assessments.

COURSE OVERVIEW

In this three-hour course, students and staff will learn how to apply social capital building strategies that will improve service delivery, advance equity, and positively impact future economic opportunities. The purpose of the course is to teach participants how to engage in the social capital building process with a range of connections inside and outside of their communities. In particular, workshop participants will learn culturally competent techniques for accessing an individual's social capital assets and leveraging those assets to maximize economic life chances, remove barriers to gainful employment, and post secondary education success.

Social Capital Development seeks to develop participants’ skills and knowledge in:

• Identifying and building strong relationships to opportunity networks.
• Strategically linking to opportunity agents who can act as sources of labor market information and career development support.
• Measuring and monitoring social capital development.
