Course Overview
Social capital = the value of one’s connections to prosperous individuals, organizations, and institutions. It’s one of the greatest predictors of economic and social success. Without it, underserved communities are set up to fail.
Social Capital Builders Academy equips Workforce, Youth Development and Violence Prevention staff with the knowledge and skills to effectively use this vital—but often overlooked—outcome-based asset.
During the three days academy, we’ll explore how to use social capital to promote economic and social successes within the populations you serve. You’ll learn how to teach social capital literacy, conduct social network analysis and support social capital development for youth and adults.
With the skills you’ll take home, you’ll be able to:
- Cultivate assets and use this power to address structural inequities facing low-income populations and people of color.
- Empower clients with resources to launch successful careers they never thought possible (and maybe never even considered!)
- Incorporate frameworks into your organization to enhance opportunities for underprivileged groups.
- Harness the power of social network analysis to overcome barriers and develop connections and hubs.
- Strengthen relationships through reciprocation, for long-term labor market success.
- Employ cultural techniques for accessing and leveraging individual and group social capital assets.
- Improve program outcomes and participant engagement by leveraging social assets.
- Maximize economic life chances, remove systemic barriers to gainful employment, and mediate the harmful eects of racism, discrimination, and homophily.
